Abstract

Grounded in the commemoration of Singapore’s 60th anniversary of independence, this visual essay proposes a photographic cartography that navigates between the aesthetics of lucid dreaming and rigorous cultural analysis. Using the allegory of Alice in Wonderland as a guiding thread, the journey questions the underlying tensions in the construction of the city-state’s identity. Through the images, the essay addresses the tension between hyper-technological awe and architectural exuberance on one hand, and the meticulous administration of cultural diversity and the restriction of civil liberties within ethnic districts on the other. Here, the camera operates not merely as a register of a precise urban choreography, but as a critical device that destabilizes the notion of a modern utopia, raising key questions about the cost of freedom in contemporary development processes.
