Contributions by black feminism and critical schools of feminism to the study of men and masculinities

Abstract

I am offering the present reflection in the framework of a research proposal I am pursuing in the framework of research I am doing to opt for the degree of Magister in Gender Studies at the National University of Colombia, Bogotá campus. The purpose of the study is to understand, from an inter-sectional perspective – in other words understanding that gender, race, class and in this case age, are configured interdependently and are part of a system of historically created oppression – the production of subjectivities of youths in Comuna 13 in the city of Medellín belonging to the Hip-Hop culture. Specifically these are two collectives: the La Elite Hip Hop Network and the Son Batá Afro-Colombian Corporation. The study also seeks to show the resistances and knowledge they have built from their position of sublternativity and their experiences, and make a critical analysis of the permanencies and leaks in a model of hegemonic masculinity, evidenced in the discourses and practices of masculinity by men and women in this sector.
