Abstract

In this work, electrocoagulation with graphite electrodes was evaluated as an advanced technique for the treatment of wastewater from the depilation process in tanneries, to reduce turbidity, total organic carbon, and sulfide concentration in this type of effluent. The inert properties of graphite offer the advantage of not generating dilution of metal ions in water. In this sense, the effect of the reaction time (30 min and 60 min), the number of graphite electrodes (2 and 4), and the applied current intensity (12 A and 24 A) on the percentage of decrease o reduction of the concentration of the variables mentioned previously. For the development of the project, an experimental design of factorial type 23 was proposed. The volume of water for each test was 0.002 m3 and the water temperature was 20 ° C ± 2 ° C. The response variables to determine the effectiveness of the process were the percentage of turbidity removal, Total Organic Carbon, and Chemical Oxygen Demand. The experimental results based on the Analysis of Variance allowed us to establish that the process factors or selected experimental variables influence the removal percentages of the response variables, in addition, it was determined that the conditions of greater removal of sulfides and turbidity were achieved with 4 electrodes, 24 A and 60 minutes of reaction time, for those conditions the applied current density was 107.14 A/m2. The highest removal percentages were 41.46%, 75.02%, and 35.73% for sulfides, turbidity, and Total Organic Carbon respectively. During the tests, there was no wear on the electrodes and no color changes in the water.
