Implementation of the ip protocol through open-source software and wi-fi networks

Abstract

Currently, the information and communication technologies make important impacts on businesses, such as process streamlining, and cost, resource and time reduction. This has led companies to a continuous search for fittable and cost-benefit technological solutions, which are available in numerous applications as both licensed and
open-source software. When it comes to telecommunications, the market provides quite complete communication services, such as IP telephony. This service is essential for small businesses as well as for multinational companies. Besides, these protocols offer easy-to-use, accessible, economic and, even, free options—like in this study—. This represents robust phone communications among their staff. In this project, the authors carried out a classroom lab using IP telephony operated through open-source wi-fi networks. The results show that the IP protocol made it possible to make phone calls between mobile extensions using the company’s wi-fi network. It can be concluded that the implementation of such solutions encourages the use of free software, contributing to process streamlining and cost reduction, particularly in small
and medium-sized enterprises.
