Abstract

This article proposes the idea of understanding the city of Girardot as an open cultural community in which you can identify traces of the old commercial activity associated with the fundamental role played by this urban center at the beginning and middle of the last century, when it was one of the main fluvial ports of Colombia. These traces are represented in the works of art, monuments and urban furniture that still has the population. However, Girardot’s inhabitants are unaware of the origins as well as the meaning and in many cases the very existence of these objects. Therefore, the research project plans to draw up an inventory of the art objects of the city and its regions, aiming to make visible both the existence and the meaning of the same, to own and to strangers. The notion of visual literacy, presented by Raquel Gómez Díaz (2010), is used as a theoretical and methodological tool with which it was expected to advance a process of analyzing that inventory. This, in order to be able to understand this important point of social, economic and cultural convergence of the region, as a scenario of tolerance, coexistence and acceptance of diversity.
