Abstract

Soap operas are a widely sutdied television product, particularly as an emblematic Hispanic genre. This paper approaches, among other topics, how their contents can reproduce and create in the public social representations of couples, family, and gender relationships. This research analyzes the conceptions of women’s images present in Voltea pa’ que te enamores. The authors followed a qualitative approach. They created categories of analysis appropriate for the content analysis of a set of chapters chosen, in order to know how such topic is addressed in the soap opera. It was concluded that, even though there was an attempt to show non-hegemonic women’s images, some conservative stereotypes still play an important role. The authors suggest to conduct further research on this kind of topics, especially taking into consideration the potential of this genre as an education and entertainment strategy.
